LESSON ONE:

The symbolism of the tying of the belt is an original Purple Dragon philosophy. Its founder, Professor Jacob, has taught this philosophy worldwide for the past twenty years. This method has been copied by many, but few have ever given due credit to Purple Dragon and Professor Jacob.

However, the next time any Purple Dragon student reads this information anywhere, he or she should be proud to know of its origin.

Here is the meaning of tying and wearing the belt in the Don Jitsu Ryu System:

Tying your belt the Purple Dragon marital arts way entails much more than just wrapping it around you and tying a reef knot.

It has a special meaning and plays a very important role in bushido (way of the warrior) and your martial arts training.

The process of tying your belt reminds one of respect, self-control, awareness, caution, self-confidence and the self-discipline needed to achieve Black Belt excellence and true Bushi Do (way of the warrior spirit).

Belt Tying Sequence

STEP ONE

STEP TWO

In Purple Dragon we teach our students to first put the two ends together  as demonstrated by Gerald Welch and  find the center of the belt, which represents equilibrium.

Placing the center between the navel and the groin represents the giver of life and the navel represents the receiver of life.
You always begin in a neutral position between giving and receiving.

STEP THREE

STEP  FOUR

The belt should cross in the back forming an "X". The "X" represents 'the unknown quantity.' (This was popularized by Malcolm X and People of Color during the Civil Rights movement in the United States of America, who did not want to continue using their slave names and instead used an X).
The unknown quantities are all the things that people do behind your back so that you may not see.

This complete circle represents the universe, which is to remind us that we are all of one. When the two ends meet in front it is to remind us "what goes around comes around" (karma) so you should always respect others and think before you act.

STEP FIVE

STEP SIX

You then cross the belt in the front, left over right forming another "X". This "X" represents the unknown quantities. Unknown quantities are the things that happen to you right under your nose.

Next, you take the right end up and under both the left end and the center of the belt. It represents the times you are crushed down, with perseverance you will rise again. For example, tell yourself "I am here to persevere, and NEVER give up." Or, "Today I begin new Life, I am unstoppable." Or, "I came, I saw, I entered, I conquered."

STEP SEVEN

You complete tying your belt to form a reef knot. You tug both ends three times as you tighten the knot. These three tugs represent challenge, solution, change. So there is a solution that will bring about a positive change. Or, Mind, Body Spirit." The end of your belt should hang evenly to represent equilibrium.

When the reef knot is completed, the ends of the belt must fall evenly. After tugging three times, which represent problem solution and positive change. Good luck to all those of you who have placed the Purple Dragon belt around your waist. We will definitely see you at the top
