Q:
What is Don Jitsu Ryu ?
A: Don Jitsu Ryu is a fighting system that is
modern in concept but ancient in character and is
governed by a philosophy of determination to
overcome many of life's challenges.
Q:
How long does it take to become a Black Belt?
A:
Two and a half to three years on a proper
training program, but it depends on the student and
the quality of instructions.
Q:
Where can I get my martial arts uniform and
training gears?
A:
At Black Belt Martial Arts Supply, in Trinidad or
from your local Purple Dragon Instructor.
Q:
If I've been absent from classes for a long
period of time, can I keep my same rank when I
return?
A:
Yes, all you have to do is pay the US$99.00
evaluation fee to have you reinstated.
Q:
If I've been absent from classes for a long
period of time, do I still have to pay my monthly
dues?
A:
Yes, once there is an agreement with you on a
particular type of membership, we are expected to be
there to teach you, whether you are there or not.
So yes, the membership agreement must be honored in
terms of prompt payment. If a student
stops training for whatever reason before the end of
his/her contract agreement, the entire balance
becomes due and payable without notice.
Q:
If I held a colored rank with my previous martial
arts school, and I now want to join Purple Dragon,
can I keep the rank from my previous school?
A:
Not really, because Don Jitsu Ryu is unique to
Purple Dragon and new students must go through the
complete orientation process including our ranking
system. We grade our students according to our
international standards, no one else's.
However if a person has good basics, that may help
them to rise a lot faster in our Purple Dragon
grading examinations.
Q:
When I do my grading examination for my next belt
rank, do I have to pay?
A:
Yes, just like when you take many academic exam
there is a fee, the same goes for your martial arts
exam. The grading exam itself is free but
students must pay for the processing of
certificates, paperwork and computer files.
Q:
Should I get a skip from one belt color to the
next, do I have to pay the processing fee for my new
belt color, or also the one that I skipped?
A:
Yes, there is a fee attached for the processing of every belt
color. If a student gets a skip to another
belt, and they cannot afford to pay the processing
fee, they do not have to accept the skip to the
higher belt color.
Q:
Does Purple Dragon allow its students to have
multi-memberships with other schools?
A:
We avoid this type of membership as much as
possible because we believe that students should
know where their loyalty lies, and which system they
would prefer to represent if they go to a
tournament, or things of that nature. It's
difficult to be a Democrat and a Republican at the
same time, or support the PNM or UNC at the same
time!
Q:
Can I bring a friend from another karate school
to look at the Purple Dragon classes?
A:
Yes, if your friend is interested in what we are
doing, they may visit one class.
Q:
Are friends/family
members/boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses allowed to
sit in the Dojo and wait for me while in class?
A:
Once your invited guest is not distracting
the class in any way (by talking loudly, playing
music, walking up and down or trying to talk to you
while you are on the floor, cell phone distractions) we generally don't have
any objection to them being in the Dojo, once they
are seated quietly and not causing any disturbance
to you or the instructor.
Q:
What is the most effective form of martial arts?
A: All authentic martial arts styles have great
elements of danger or effectiveness. The situation one is placed
in and their confidence and ability to react in such a situation
will determine the best style for that person.
Q:
Who is the best martial artist in the world?
A: There are many good martial artists with different
strengths and
barrios
It is difficult to say
for sure, but Prof. Don Jacob is considered to be
among the most knowledgeable.
Q:
Who can promote a person to the rank of Black Belt?
A:
A martial arts school
teacher who is certified
and qualified as an official examiner of a particular
'Ryu' or system can promote someone to two ranks
under their present rank.
Q:
Can martial arts stop a bullet?
A: When I am asked these questions, I am often saddened
by the mentality of weakness of some individuals.
When a man believes in the gun, the gun becomes
his master and his strength and weakness is placed
in the gun. The martial artist's strength is placed
in his/her unarmed ability. If the martial artist
is well trained and in close enough range he/she has a chance of disarming
those that depend only on the bullet. I have
nothing against the man that carries a license
firearm and is responsible about it.
Q:
Can someone use their martial arts to create a job?
A: Yes a martial artist who is certified, qualified
and licensed as an official instructor of a particular
'Ryu' or system .
Q:
Why isn't karate in the Olympics?
A: Karate is not an Olympic sport because of political
interference and the egos of the less talented.
Martial arts is an industry where Dracula is in
charge of the blood bank. The Dracula's of the martial
arts industry are the ones in charge of the very
lifeline of the industry in many cases.
Q:
Does martial arts have anything to do with religion?
A:
One does not have to follow another person's
spiritual beliefs to excel in the martial arts. When
martial arts was started, the intention was to
strengthen the mind, body and spirit of an
individual. In order to feed the mind, we use
intellect, and in order to feed the spirit, we use
the Creator or the universe. In thanking the Creator, some use
different methods to do so.
Q:
What is the difference between sport karate and
self-defense?
A: Self-defense is the ability to defend oneself
successfully, adapting animal instincts for a life
and death situation. Sport karate is the ability
to follow rules and regulations that govern a sport
event that has insurance restrictions, legal restrictions,
etc. It is not always training for a life and death situation,
whereas self-defense is. The average attackers use
guns, knives and other objects to hurt you , you
must train
appropriately.
Q:
Does martial arts promote violence?
A: On the contrary, martial arts is non-violent.
The real martial artist does not initiate quarrels
but is always prepared to successfully reciprocate
to situations that may arise against bullies or life
threatening citations.
Q:
If martial arts is supposed to be a discipline, then
why are so many schools rivals with each other?
A: It may be nice if schools of similar disciplines
could unite but sometimes what hampers coalition
is greed, ego, jealousy and commerce. Even in
religion, there are several churches that go
against each other's teaching and philosophies,
likewise armies that are trained to keep law and
order. "He who desires peace should prepare for war."
