The Fighting Styles Don Jitsu Ryu

Updated 25-01 09

1. History Style:

This system is important as it helps you to battle and defend the system by knowing our Purple Dragon history and heritage. The History Style is a style that is  predominately a talking style, as two or more students train and talk about Don Jitsu Ryu at times.  They challenge each other's knowledge with a more knowledgeable student or teacher present to ensure accurate information is passed on.

2. Standard Style:
The Standard Style is basic and should be known and understood  exactly the same way to every Purple Dragon student worldwide.  The Standard Style is the knowledge that the loyal and committed ones must have in order to protect and preserve the Don Jitsu Ryu system as taught by the Founder long after he is not present.

3. Tight Sword Style:
It is used for short fast hand attacks, also to hug and cover the body from attacks. This style requires strong  stable basic attacks and defenses, it is great for beginners to developed good habits that will last a lifetime.  Good stances are very important The Tight Sword Style, works well with jabs, reverse punches, back-fists and hammer-fists.  The kicks recommended include front, side, roundhouse and hook kicks as well as front leg sweep takedown.

 4. Bounce Style:
The bounce style is used for relaxing and confusing you opponent's distance and timing. This style allows you to suddenly explode and change angles and execute jump techniques, among others. The Bounce Style makes you look taller than you are. It helps you to execute techniques such as leaping back fist, leaping reverse punch, leaping hammer fist and leaping ridge hand. The kicks recommended are spin jump back kick, jump outside crescent kick, defensive jump front kick and defensive jump side kick.

5. Crab Style:
It is used for sideways fighting in a horse stance predominantly. It is good for sidekicks, spin kicks, ridge hands, and back fist among others. The Crab Style affords you quick Tai Sabaki (pivot) techniques mostly off your rear leg.

6. Dodging and Evasion Style:
This style allows you to dodge and evade your opponent by using the entire floor space, causing him to miss his target. The Dodging and Evasion Style takes a lot of energy out of you, but this is a tremendous way to avoid being tagged and to confuse your opponent and keep him off balance before you strike. Lots of cardio vascular training is necessary for this style.

 7. Lead Hand Style:
The Lead Hand Style allows you to execute techniques off the front hand or leg, which gives you more speed and a shorter distance to the target. The Lead Hand Style affords you the ability to use quick jabs, ridge hands, hammer fists and back fists. In addition, you can switch your stance in the middle of your opponent's attack.

8. Pyramid Style:
It is used to create an opening so that the opponent may attack areas you open to them. Your hand posture looks like a pyramid in front of your chest and face. Your stances should remain light and fast, and much head and shoulder movement is required. Like the Dodging and Evasion Style, The Pyramid Style takes much energy out of you, but the rewards are great in terms of keeping your opponent off balance so that you can execute all of the techniques mentioned in the above styles. Lots of cardio vascular training is necessary for this style.

9. Explosive Style:
Explosive Style is a blitz attack which is totally unexpected by the opponent. This attack works well when in difficulty. The Explosive Style can be used when one has to be more committed than other times. It is a style which requires a lot of power, speed, direct attack and commitment. This style is very limited to strong, "back to basic" techniques.

10.  Ten Hand Style:
This style teaches you how to flow with hand, feet and body techniques in a rhythmic fashion. This style helps you to attack and counter attack with confidence. The Ten Hand Style, when practiced with a good and experienced partner brings your technique up to a higher level. The Ten Hand Style is a very ceremonial style of fighting, it requires great concentration and timing. The rhythm of the music of the drum is required for this style.

 11. Heaven and Earth Style:
The Heaven and Earth Style allows you to execute techniques airborne and while sitting, kneeling or laying on the floor. The Heaven and Earth Style is especially suited for those students who are athletically gifted. This style takes much energy out of you, but the rewards are great in terms of keeping your opponent off balance so that you can execute all of the techniques mentioned in the above styles. Lots of cardio vascular training is necessary for this style.

 12. Invitation Style:
The Invitation Style allows you to assume postures that indicate that you are inviting an attack directed to the target area you expose. This gives you a chance to execute one counter, and one or more attacks. The Invitation Style requires perfect counter attack skills. Timing, bravery and commitment are required to successfully execute this style.

13. Sweep Style:
The Sweep Style allows you to do a variety of sweeps to keep the opponent off balance or take him down. This allows you to score a finishing technique. The Sweep Style works very well against opponents who are more inclined to throw kicks at you.

14. Posture Style:
The Posture Style allows the student to become creative and imaginative in researching various ways in which our techniques can be applied from Kata postures. Any amount of techniques can evolve from The Posture Style.

15. Robot Style:
This style looks very robot-like and allows you the posture to recuperate from being hit in the body. This style uses antagonistic muscles over cooperative muscles. For example, tensing the muscles when receiving a blow or executing one. The Robot Style has many explosive style elements.

16.Short Man Style:
If you are the shorter person you may want to force the attacker to attack downwards so you can protect yourself with more ease. Keep a low elusive stance and place one hand horizontally in front of your chest. The Short Man Style requires you to stay on the inside to avoid the extension of the taller fighter.

17. Tall Man Style:
If you are the taller person you should not allow your opponent to get into your safety zone, by keeping a safe distance between you and the shorter opponent ,use full range or extension techniques to your advantage. The Tall Man Style works even better for those with much flexibility.

18. Sticky Hand Style:
Sticky Hand Style is the ability to grasp the opponent's sleeves, wrists, trousers, or ankle just before executing a technique. It minimizes the opponent's ability to run away from you. The  Sticky Hand Style gives you the advantage to execute upper and lower body throws and also keeps the opponent off balance. This style also helps you with short inside strikes.

19.Grappling Style:
This style allows you to protect yourself in a takedown or grappling type situation. The  Grappling Style requires mental and physical toughness, stamina.

20. Healing hand & Breathing Style:
This style is vital  as it deals with the healing aspect of the Don Jitsu Ryu.  The Healing hand & Breathing Style teaches about the importance of   proper breathing techniques, usage of herbal remedies, massages  techniques of several kinds and having a positive mental attitude  in Don Jitsu Ryu  martial arts.
