Purple Dragon
Team brings victory again to T&T at U.S. Open
World Karate Championships 2009
On Monday 13th July,
scores of parents, fans and supporters,
accompanied by members of the Laventille Rhythm
Section, thronged the Piarco International
Airport to meet American Airlines 1819, arriving
from Orlando, Florida via Miami. They were there
to welcome home the victorious Purple Dragon
Karate Team, fresh from their tremendous success
at the 2009 U.S. Open Karate Championships, held
at the Coronado Springs Resort, Disneyworld.
The team, led by world-renowned
World Champion and champion-maker Professor Don
Jacob, was comprised of 3 coaches, 16
competitors and 6 parents/ supporters. The
Purple Dragon T&T Team joined 9 other Purple
Dragon International schools to form an
unstoppable World Team which reigned supreme
throughout the 2 days of competition.
However, it was Purple Dragon
T&T’s Sensei Arnold King, (ably assisted by
Senseis Kamau Drayton, Floyd Baptiste,
Christopher Walton and Antonio Thompson) who
brought the audience to their feet, with a
riveting and exciting performance which won them
the coveted World Self Defence Grand
Championship and a spot on ESPN Sports Channel
which was shown live to millions of viewers.
This clip will also be re-broadcasted on ESPN 2
on July 19th at1.30 p.m.
The unsponsored Purple Dragon T&T
team won 32 Trophies, 6 medals and 1 World
Championship Cup and was the only Trinidad and
Tobago team to make the Night of Champions. The
other T&T teams viewed from the audience.
Congratulations go out to
Professor Don Jacob and his support staff for
keeping the National Flag flying high on the
international scene.
