TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO WINS IN CAYMAN ISLANDS 2008

A victorious seventy seven (77) member Purple Dragon Karate team returned to Trinidad and Tobago. The champs exited the customs area at Piarco airport from the front door on Wednesday July 9th 2008,  led by their world-renowned coaches and

martial arts experts, Professor Don Jacob, Shihans Anthony Thompson and Neal Hewitt.

Scores of cheering family

members and fans waited until the late hours of the night to welcome the team home.

The team's victory over the weekend was no easy task, to win a total of one hundred and thirty four (134) medals and six (6) grand championship  trophies at the Grand Slam Martial Arts Tournament held in the Grand  Cayman Island on July 5th 2008.

In all the Trinidad and Tobago team  won the highest total of  medals at the tournament - forty nine (49)  gold, twenty nine(29) silver, thirty four (34) bronze and six (6) grand

championship trophies. The team, whose ages ranged from 6 years to 55 years, came up against some tough international competition from USA, Canada, Jamaica, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Antigua, Dominica, Cayman Islands and Grenada to name a few that "represented their country successfully and at a very high standard", said a pleased Don Jacob.

Out of the 77 competitors on the T&T team, 12 were from the Purple Dragon  Tobago branch and 65 from Trinidad.

“The organization of the tournament  in Grand Cayman was very professional and the level and quality of competition was top-class” said Purple Dragon Chief Instructor Professor Don Jacob.

It was an open tournament so the Trinidad and Tobago team came up against many other competitors. The level of sportsmanship and discipline demonstrated by all the competitors was excellent, and there were no serious injuries. Apart from the normal

divisions of katas, sparring, weaponry and self defense, there were also exciting team demonstrations, synchronized forms and synchronized weapons.

Introducing Purple Dragon's Newest Black Belts

They are from the # 119/ 120 Testing

Purple Dragon has accomplished yet another successful Black Belt exam. Seventeen (17) out of (17) candidates from 2 countries successfully participated and attained their black belts  in the 121st Grading.

We call on all Purple Dragon countries to organize the usual victory training for the following candidates at their branches on behalf of their tremendous success.  Again! the THEME for that grading was “Bring and Keep Your Heart into the Dojo” and "Bring Two Solutions to Every Problem".

The next Grading will be held in August 2009.  Again limited spaces are available, so branch chiefs are asked to apply on behalf of your students early.

A Look at The Successes of 2008

Tortola and Dominica.

July 15-17th 2008:   Professor Jacob conducted grading in Antigua for Senseis Don Francis and Sensei Ivan Rodriguez.

 October:

Grading was held  in the US, Canada and Cayman Islands:

looking back in 2008, Sensei Daniel Jacob  accompanied the Professor and assisted him on this tour after leaving Canada:  October 20th – 27th  the first leg of the tour was completed, our hosts, Sensei Amber Murphy, Instructor Ian Shu and Sensei Daniel Jacob did a great job in preparing their students for the exam and seminars. Several students were promoted to new belt ranks in Canada.

looking back in 2008, Shihan Johnny Madrid greeted Professor Jacob and his son, Sensei Daniel at the JFK Airport in New York:  October 27th until Nov. 1st.   The lessons of the Don Jitsu Ryu were shared with students and parents of the New York branch. Thanks to Instructor Avi Basdeo and Instructor Sherwin Valentine. Several students were upgraded to new belt ranks in New York.

looking back in 2008, November 1st.  The father and son team arrived in Mississippi and were both welcomed warmly by hostess Instructor Chrissy Herrington, her nephew Oakley and Sensei Kamau Drayton the champion Sensei from Trinidad. He spent a total of 6 weeks between Mississippi and Georgia Purple Dragon branches helping to prepare the students and to assist Instructor Chrissy with her brand new Purple Dragon dojo.  The seminars and gradings were successfully conducted until Nov. 5th. The highlight of the tour was being in the US when the first African American President Mr. Barack Obama became the president of the US "WOW", to see the coming together of all people was breathtaking.

looking back in 2008, It was
Georgia on our minds: Nov 5th – Nov 9th. Inst. Chris Coxall and his wife Sharron did the hosting this time. "Boy they are classy people", many purple dragon black belts traveled to Georgia from different parts of the US to train with Professor Jacob and Sensei Daniel Jacob to support instructor Chris Coxall's students.  Then we all went to be  inducted into the Koroshi-do Hall of Fame in Georgia, where we were invited as special guests. It was an experience to talk about with the following people, as there was a group of breakaway purple dragon students at the function. To learn more of the excitement talk to: Sensei Albert Andrews, Sensei Daniel Jacob, Sensei Kamau Drayton, Sensei Liselle Griffith, Sensei Clara Montoute, Instructor Chris Coxall, Instructor Avi Basdeo, Instructor Chrissy Herrington, Instructor Kerwin Valentine and Shihan Johnny Madrid.

looking back in 2008, South Florida was the next stop, Nov.9th – Nov 11th.  The host this time was Sensei Albert Andrews  & Instructor Candia Fischer who flew from Georgia with Professor and Sensei Daniel Jacob. There were two seminars and three grading exams. We had a great time with Sensei, Instructor, and the parents and students.

looking back in 2008, Tampa was next on deck,  Nov. 11th – Nov 13th. Sensei Albert and Instructor Candia and little Zoë made the 4 hour drive to take Sensei Daniel and Professor Jacob there. They trained with us and then made another 4 hour drive back to South Florida, leaving the rest of hosting to Senseis Clara Montoute, Sensei Gary  Montoute and Instructor Scott Coryea after a wonderful stay. At 3:45 am we were picked up from our Hotel by Sensei Gary and it was to our final trip in the U.S.

looking back in 2008,  Nov. 14th – Nov. 18th.  We stayed  5 hours at the Miami Airport, waiting for our Cayman flight.  We arrived and were greeted by Sensei Floyd Baptiste, Sensei Geddes Hislop, and Instructor Pitta. We were taken to the Chicken Chicken restaurant to have a meal. Sensei Floyd Baptiste arranged a massage therapy at our Hotel for Sensei Daniel and I.  The following days were full of gradings and seminars.

The time had finally come to say bye for now to every one. The one month on the road with Sensei Daniel was great! Thanks to all the Purple Dragon Heads of States for your love, loyalty and friendship.

Thanks a million, Professor. Jacob.

looking back in 2008, November 24th 26th :

It was 4am when the phone call came true, it was Shihan Anthony Thompsons voice, "Professor, this is your wakeup call", we met at the Piarco International Airport in Trinidad. We  boarded a LIAT

flight, the first stop was Tortola, where we were greeted by Sensei Abeana Baptiste and Instructor Vern Turnbull. A brand new Mercedes Benz was parked to take us to our hotel, we were invited to be seated by our host and driver Sensei Abeana.  In the evening Shihan Thompson and I went to the Dojo, we had a successful grading and seminar in B.V.I. for the two Purple Dragon Branches.

looking back in 2008, Report from Tortola instructors:

We had an energetic and informative Purple Dragon seminar and an awesome Purple Dragon grading. Professor and Shihan have left us on a high here in Tortola.  Sensei Abeana Baptiste and I, Instructor

Vern Turnbull sincerely thank Professor Jacob and Shihan Thompson for their love, energy and inspiration while here.

 looking back in 2008, November 26th 28th :

We had a 4 hour delay on our connection in Antigua to Dominica, on arrival we were met by our host Instructor Shannah Robin. For the first time ever the Professor and Shihan got sick while traveling for the Grading and Seminar in Dominica. When we arrived at our hotel we had a  fifteen minutes rest and were read to go.

November:

looking back in 2008, November 29th: Sensei Ludwin Jacob successfully hosted his 6th Annual Open South Central Sport Karate Championships. The Championship was held at the Chaguanas Regional Indoor Sports Complex with top local Purple Dragon competitors, international Purple Dragon competitors including those from Canada and Tortola and  special guest Shihan Johnny Madrid from NY, along with local T&T Martial Arts Schools.

looking back in 2008, December:

December 3rd:   Sensei Rosemarie Thomas hosted Grading in Tobago from 4:00-8:00pm.

December 5th to 7th The #119 Black Belt grading was held at the Purple Dragon World Headquarters in Trinidad W.I.  All international students graded on the 5th to 7th with a selected

number of locals students.

December 8th- 13th:  National Grading in Trinidad was a great success.

December 12th to 14th:  The #120 Black Belt grading was held at the Purple Dragon World Headquarters in Trinidad W.I.  The second team were mostly  the local students, because of the

amount  of candidates: local and international, the grading went on for two weekends. Because of the rapid progression of Purple Dragon World Wide, candidates must register very early and book their Air tickets  to secure a space for their Black Belt exams in Trinidad.

December 19th: The Tots and Kids Year End Party and Belt Changing Ceremony was held at the various Dojos in Trinidad and Tobago.
