Self
Defense Tips For Women
By
Professor Don Jacob
"The
senseless murder of my own child has renewed
my motivation as a martial arts teacher to
help protect as many lives as I possibly can
through my martial arts."
In
our continued effort to help protect our women
and members in the Purple Dragon family, we
offer these effective safety tips. I do hope
that everyone will memorize and practice them,
on and off the Purple Dragon School so that
it will become a part of your awareness program.
I expect everyone who reads this article to
print it out and pass it on to every loved one
and encourage them to join a Purple Dragon
School at a location closest to them.
I
also expect you to continue visiting
www.purple-dragon.com
for new tips on women’s safety and other Purple
Dragon matters. Purple Dragon ladies remember:
our team of female instructors is willing
and available for lectures, demonstrations
and conduct professional seminars to women’s groups,
rape crisis centers, etc.
I
hope that these tips will help to make your
life more safe and comfortable.
1.
There are many parts of your body that can
be used as a lethal weapon. For example, for
close range defense:
The knee
The elbow
The head
The palm heel
The fingertips
The heel and instep
2.
If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse,
AVOID HANDING IT TO HIM, unless he demands
it of you. Toss it away from you as a distraction
and escape in the other direction. For example,
one of our ladies was on her way home. She
was walking past an abandoned lot that was
poorly lighted. She was attacked from behind
by a robber who tried to force her into the
abandoned property. She yelled sternly: ‘You
are trying to hurt me, and can’t you see that
people are looking?’ He released her to look
around and she used that opportunity to run
to escape. She said afterwards that ‘No one
was really looking’ but that was her method
of distraction, and thank goodness it worked
for her!
3.
If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a
car and your legs are free, kick out the back
tail lights and stick your arm or legs out
the hole and start waving to attract attention
for help. The driver may not see you but everybody
else behind will. This has saved lives before
and it may save your life also.
4.
Some women have a tendency to get into their
cars after shopping, eating,
working, etc., and just sit doing their checkbook,
or counting cash, making a list, or putting
on makeup, etc. DON'T DO THIS! You don’t know
who could be watching you from afar, or even
from a neighboring darkly tinted vehicle.
This is the perfect
opportunity for an attacker to get in on the
passenger side and put a gun to your head,
if your doors are not locked and your windows
are not up.
.At
Purple Dragon we strongly emphasize these
safety tips at our women’s martial arts and
fitness classes about how to get into and
out of your car in a parking lot, or parking
garage:
5. Be aware: look around you, look into your
car, at the passenger side,
the floor, and in the back seat. Some cars
have a feature where the interior will light
up once you press the remote to enter the
car. That can some times be a helpful feature.
If your vehicle is tinted or paneled, get
close to your vehicle and look at the inside
to confirm that it is safe to enter. If you
sense or see that something is wrong, DO NOT
ENTER WITHOUT CALLING FOR HELP.
6.
We always encourage our members that carry
cellular phones to program the number of someone
they can call for help in the area where they
are so that they can speed dial it in an emergency.
7.
Whether or not you are parked next to a big
van or a regular sized vehicle, be alert.
If you feel safer entering your car from the
passenger side, then do that. From Purple
Dragon’s research many serial killers, rapists
and kidnappers attack their victims by pulling
them into their vehicles while the unsuspecting
or untrained women are attempting to get into
their cars. Martial arts and self defense
training will always give women the added
confidence and ability to be more alert and
aware than naïve women.
8.
Look at the car parked on the driver's side
of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If
you feel uncomfortable about a suspicious
person's) sitting or standing anywhere near
your car, you may want to walk back into the
mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman or
someone to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS
BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY and better concerned
than dead.
9.
It is always advisable to keep an extra change
of clothes (like a T-shirt and trousers),
a pair of sneakers, and a walking stick, baseball
bat (or something of that nature) in your
car, in case you ever have to abandon your
vehicle and walk a long lonely distance.
10.
An elevator is easy transport, but we advise
our ladies to be equally careful in an elevator
as they are on the stairs. Remember that the
type of footwear you have can make a big difference
if you have to run down or up a staircase.
Sometimes you may have to kick your shoes
off and run with them in your hand to a quicker
escape.
11. If the predator has a gun and you are
not under his control, ALWAYS RUN!
A moving target is much harder to hit, and
even if you are shot, it may NOT be a vital
organ. RUN! We give women lots of kick and
run drills and dodging and evasion drills
as a part of our fitness program at the majority
of our Purple Dragon classes.
12.
Women are always trying to be sympathetic:
STOP IT! It may get
you raped, or killed. Most of the guys that
commit violent crimes against women are good-looking,
educated, and know how to play on the sympathies
of unsuspecting
women and young girls.
Avoid
these common mistakes that women often make
that could result in them getting kidnapped,
attacked, raped, or killed.
13.
Getting into the attacker's car when he pulls
a gun and orders you to get into his vehicle.
Most attackers won’t always shoot you in a
public place. They want you to get into the
car so that they can drive you to a deserted
place and torture you. Don't comply.
Run Screaming. It is much more likely
that he will just move on to an easier target.
Don’t be the easy target!
14.
If a man drives alongside you, pointing
at your car pretending something is wrong,
and you know that your car is working and
feeling okay, do not stop until you get to
a well-lit and populated area or gas station
where you can look the car over yourself,
or ask an attendant for help. Remember to
keep checking

tips under the section ‘Women’
15.
Not locking your car doors while driving can
be a big mistake. In many cases
in developing countries there are one or more
attackers who simply walk up to a woman's
car while she's at a traffic light and jump
in with their gun or knife drawn. LOCK YOUR
DOORS!
16.
Do not open the front door unless you
have positively identified who is there.
If you don't have peep-holes in your home,
look through a window or crack in the door
first. In many cases an attacker gains
access to his victims simply by knocking on
their door. Don't let a stranger into
your home. He then has a relatively
private place to attack you.
17.
In many developing countries, there are guys
who used their private vehicle to illegally
work as a hired vehicle. Many women get accustomed
to using this transport service because sometimes
that is all that is available in that area.
This could be a dangerous practice so make
sure that if you must use this service, you
know the driver, the vehicle number and make
of vehicle before getting in.
18.
In developing countries, be alert when taking
public transport. If you go to the grocery
store at night, don't be shy about asking
someone to keep their eyes out for you while
you are waiting for your transport to arrive.
19.
Women are abducted from parking lots, going
home from parties, night clubs, or just standing
and waiting for a taxi or a ride home. If
you must go to functions that will finish
late and you do not have trusted male companions,
it is always good to invite other female friends
to accompany you. If you do not live alone,
always let someone know the approximate time
they can expect you home.
20.
Look in the back seat of the vehicle that
you are entering. In developing countries
we also have shared taxis so women need to
be careful of who is in the taxi and where
they will sit before getting in. If you notice
that the driver is diverting from the regular
route, immediately investigate why and if
necessary, request that he either lets you
out, or remain on the route. Use your cell
phone to call someone and tell them, ‘I may
be a little late because the driver is changing
his route so expect me two or three minutes
late.’ This is a code to let someone know
that you are uncomfortable. An attacker will
think twice about someone who appears to be
aware of what's going on.
21.
Do not trust every clean-cut honest-looking
stranger. Sex offenders do not always
look like monsters. They often look
like, or could actually be your friendly bank
teller, waiter, neighbor, priest, doctor,
lawyer, teacher, and deliveryman. Don’t
fall for the stereotyped attacker. They can
be every color, creed, race, religion, nationality
or gender, and they are everywhere. Only a
small number actually look scary. There
was a recent case in the U.S., of a man with
only one leg who beat up his victim with his
crutch before he raped her. Who would
have thought that a one-legged man could be
a rapist?
22.
Do not trust any and everyone to be
alone with your children. This is a
difficult one because child molesters end
up being the last person the parents would
believe is the molester. Many child
molesting cases involve the stepfather, the
uncle, the sister's boyfriend, the grandfather,
the baby-sitter, the neighbor, the family
friend, the youth camp director, day care
worker. Although rare, even women can
be molesters. In every case, the perpetrator
appears to be a nice person, trusting, good
with children, and the family is baffled or
even in disbelief that the person could be
abusing their child. When it comes to
your children or other children in your care,
be cautious of everyone, no matter who they
are. And pay attention to what your
child says and how he/she reacts to the mention
of different people in their lives."

STEPS TO EMPLOY WHEN BEING ATTACKED
The
assailant has a knife and is about to attack.
You quickly take off your belt, which you
should get into the habit of carrying with
you.
You
hit him with the buckle of the belt across
the head and ear.
As
the belt encircles his neck, you pull the
belt as to pull his head downwards so as to
rip the skin from the assailant's neck.
